Omicron Blues

By this point, I feel like pretty much everyone is fed up with the pandemic. Okay, maybe not the stockholders of pharmaceutical companies making vaccines or cures for it.

Even though it was not unexpected, the emergence of the Omicron variant has dealt a fatal blow to the idea that the pandemic would begin to wind down soon. What is even worse is the uncertainty regarding what an individual is supposed to do to deal with the situation.

Omicron appears to spread more easily but the severity of the infection it causes is not clear. There are also questions about whether the existing vaccines are effective against it. Nevertheless everyone is being encouraged to get a booster shot for additional protection.

Logically I understand that scientists need to collect more data and need sufficient time to analyze it to find answers. However from an emotional perspective, it is very dispiriting to realize that it is not going to be easy for science to catch up with and get ahead of the virus’s mutations.

But nature does work in mysterious ways. One can always hope for a miracle.
