Vacuum Cleaners

I have two vacuum cleaners in my house. The primary workhorse is an upright vacuum that is at least 15 years old. It still works just as well as it did when I first got it. The only issue with it is that the mechanism that keeps it upright has broken and so I have to hold it up myself when I am using it. It is not the most powerful model available but since I don’t have to deal with heavy dirt or pet fur, it is perfect for my use. I plan to keep it till it stops working or I can’t get the type of bags it uses.

The other vacuum is a handheld model that I use for quick cleaning or in tight spots where the upright won’t fit.

A vacuum cleaner is one of the few home appliances that actually reduces the drudgery of house work and frees up time. However I can not help wondering if that also sets an unrealistic expectation of maintaining a spotless house.

Keeping every surface in the house dust free would be a never ending effort even with the best vacuum cleaner. Is that necessary or even beneficial?
