Insecure By Default

By now, I expect that everyone knows that IoT devices are extremely insecure. Yet I regularly see people rushing to buy the latest “connected” gizmo without even considering if it provides an actual benefit to their lives.

In the past few months, I have come across several news items about significant security vulnerabilities in “connected” systems in automobiles. And the response from the manufacturers has been dismissive at best. I don’t see this trend ending well.

I don’t like for government regulations to be the ultimate way of enforcing sound security practices but if the general consumer is not going to vote with their wallet, then it may be the only option to protect them.

Unfortunately that approach results in the risk of concentrating power into the hands of the same old technology monopolies that have been taking over everything.
